FIA and SFI certifications, motorbike helmets, personal protective equipment, homologation of two- and three-wheel motor vehicles.

FIA 8860, FIA8858 Formula 1 helmet certification

Newton Laboratory has been accredited since 2004 by FIA to complete the certification tests according FIA8860 on helmets and according FIA8858 on head restraint device (please refer to FIA technical lists n. 30 and n. 32).
Since 2009 Newton has been recognized by SFI-USA (www.sfifoundation.com) to complete the certification tests of helmet for car races and by SNELL–USA (www.smf.org) to complete the certification tests according the Snell/FIA Helmet Standards For Use in Children's Motorsport.

FIA 8862:2009 advance racing seat test

Newton laboratory has been accredited in 2009 by FIA to complete the certification tests according STANDARD FIA 8862-2009 ADVANCED RACING SEAT.
Our equipment to test the racing seat, mod RST 1575, has been developed by Newton together with AD Engineering (IT).

Equipment developed by Newton

The test rig had been designed in order to apply n. 3 loads and to increase these forces simultaneously up to the target values. Each ram is equipped with a load cell and a linear displacement transducer. The movement of the stems is automatically driven by the software through an algorithm that involves a closed control loop between the valve of the cylinder – the displacement value – the force measured.

Moreover other three displacement transducers are available to measure the deflection of the centre line according FIA8862:2009. It is possible to use only one cylinder as well as any couple. The time to get to the target value can be decided before the test. The load history (force vs time) is kept linear for the three rams. The maximum force applicable with the pulling stems is 25 kN, the maximum force applicable with the pushing stems configuration is 50 kN.

The software has been developed by Newton with AD Engineering in order to complete both the FIA and SFI tests. The software has been written to control the movement of the n. 3 cylinders and to acquire all the 6 displacement transducers + n. 3 load cells. In addition it can calculate the energy [J] during the deformation of the seat. The software can be customized to change the speed of the quasi static test or the ramp for the application of the load.

Protective helmets for drivers of motor cycles

Using the testing service of Newton it is possible to get the E3 homologation through the authority of the Italian Ministry of transportation, moreover Newton has been accredited as technical service to perform tests on behalf of Tuv Rheinland Italy, Tuv Rheinland-Luxembourg and SNCH, Société Nationale d'Homologation et de Certification (E13).
